Imagine this: You step up to a table in a restaurant. You take the restaurant's candle and place it in front of you. You tell your viewers that it is possible for you to focus your mental energies enough that you do not feel the heat of a flame, thus making your hand impervious to fire. To demonstrate this, you first ask a spectator to hold his hand over the candle flame and feel the heat of the fire. After he has convinced himself that it is indeed a real candle with a real flame, have your hands checked. (You have nothing to hide)

You pause for a short moment, focusing your thoughts and slowly place your hand directly over the candle flame at a height and length of time that would certainly burn and char flesh. You remove your hand from the candle and show your spectators your hand is unharmed.

Now you ask your participant to focus his/her thoughts as well. Ask him to imagine that he too can control his feelings; that he will not be burned by the candle flame. For example, he could imagine a thick layer of ice covers his hand. When he is ready, take his hand and hold it for a moment directly over the flame. He will actually feel nothing! However, you can control the moment when his focus is broken and the heat returns. At the snap of your fingers, the heat becomes unbearable and the spectator will have to pull his hand away from the flame.

Blow out the candle and if you wish, give it to your spectator as a souvenir.

Here are the facts:

• Can be performed with short sleeves. No special clothing required
• No sleight of hand necessary. Very easy to perform.
• Any standard candle can be used immediately. It is 100% unprepared.
• You spectator experiences the phenomenon.
• Your hands are totally empty throughout the performance.
• The heat can be “turned on and off” remotely.
• Can be performed with other fire sources (oil lamp, lighter, etc.).
• No set up time, because there isn't any. It's always ready for your performance.

Constructional Requirements

• An elegant but innocent looking pocket sized writing pad (A7 = 3 x 5 Inches).
• Handlings by the performer as well as by the participant that are absolutely normal.

• No restrictions on where on the sheet the participant can write or draw!

Miracles is one of our pet sequences. A wonderful routine, which seems very easy to implement but has an extraordinary deep impact. Due to its versatility, the sequence can also be seen as a guide in creating and developing the abilities of mentalism.

As we do quite often, we started this piece’s development by asking ourselves “what if…”

• we could reveal more than irrelevant and pointless information that we read in our participants’ minds? More than just a playing card or a random drawing for example. How about one of their most personal thoughts?
• not only one participant was dealt with; instead we would start the course of events involving the whole audience. What a major effect could this possibly have?
• writing down the thoughts we get while trying to spot what’s on the participant’s mind would not be experienced suspiciously, but rather as a part that makes perfect sense at the end or even during the interaction?
  In practice, these three requirements should be connected to each other. The attendee’s personal thought will be written down or drawn by a member of the audience.

Either way – the Miracles routine is something very special for us. And we are very sure, that the ideas and the concept we are going to share are at least inspiring for you!

In 2012 we lectured in London talking about "Sense and Meaning".

The point of our presentation was that we felt that too many mentalism performances could be characterized as an inappropriate demonstration of arbitrariness or "whateverism". It seemed to us that there were too many meaningless effects and presentations which barely scratched the surface of the audience’s minds or, more importantly, their emotions, when in fact we should be exploring them to their innermost depths – or at least the performance should appear to do so.

In the "Sense and Meaning" lecture we provided several premises and ideas on how to make routines more meaningful but we held back from revealing specific details as to how this might be done. In our "Momentous Oddities" lecture we will now keep the reasons for our intention brief but provide some effects that illustrate how we might go about establishing that meaningful emotional connection. We have decided to focus on two particular themes which we feel work well in this regard: added value for classic effects and tools for truly intuitive personal readings.

Performed properly both these themes can be personally meaningful to the performer as well as to the participant and even for the audience as a whole. Because we entrust something private and personally meaningful to our audiences we draw them into an emotional relationship with us. In other words, the openness of our feeling gets reciprocated by their openness to the experience. Our starting point of Part I will be to gather together some nostalgic stories, each of them possessing an air of vague melancholia. After that we will choreograph various effects to match that mood. This will produce a set of experiences which take on a very different appearance and feel in their outcome and impact from their traditional performance.

We aim to show how mentalism effects can be adjusted to support the primary objective of meaningful presentation. That said, the effects that we have combined in our lecture are not the only ones we would perform during a show. That would be emotionally burdensome and potentially tedious for the audience. Not only that, but the premise or effects would not be appropriate for every kind of performance or type of venue. Indeed they might be deemed completely inappropriate if you were performing in a corporate setting or in the context of a trade show, for example.

If you keep that in mind as you study our routines then we are sure that you’ll find something inspiring within the pages of this booklet. In our experience any of these effects performed as a stand-alone piece is strong enough to help you build a reputation as a sensitive, emotional and empathic performer.
